UK insolvencies rose 7.2% in Q4 last year |

A spate of retailers hitting the wall added to a rise, revealed today, in overall UK businesses going into insolvency during the final quarter of last year. The latest figures from the government-run Insolvency Service show that there were 4,260 liquidations in England & Wales in the last three months of 2011, an increase of 0.4 per cent on the previous quarter and a 7.2 per cent jump year-on-year.

John Lewis enjoyed a sales rise of 8.9% in the week ending 28 January. The increase was due largely to growth of 19.2% in sales of electrical and home technology products as the retailer experienced continued demand for mobile devices such as tablets and notebooks.
